Quick answer

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and a weekday morning is the best time of day. The bridge can close in severe weather, so keep a spare day in your plan. Allow half a day: the scenic area gives about 3.5 hours for the bridge and canyon walk. The canyon is about an hour's drive from Zhangjiajie city, and closer to Wulingyuan.

Zhangjiajie has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons and plenty of rain, most of it falling from May to August. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit. The mountain areas are typically 5 to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the city, and summer highs can reach about 39 degrees in town and around 30 in the mountains. The shoulder seasons are the comfortable ones for a walk of several hours, and mild weather makes the stairs and walkways easier.

Rain, fog and closures

The bridge can close in severe weather, and a ticket does not guarantee a crossing. Mountain weather changes quickly, so watch the forecast for your day and keep a spare day in your plan if you can. When you book through GetYourGuide, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, but that window will have passed if the bridge shuts on the morning itself, so ask your seller what happens then. The scenic area also warns visitors to watch for falling rocks and other hidden mountain hazards, which is a reason to take the walkways slowly after heavy rain.

Crowds and busy days

Crowds have shaped this bridge from the start. It was designed to carry up to 800 people at a time. Thirteen days after opening in August 2016 it closed because visitors far outnumbered the plan, and it reopened on 30 September that year. The scenic area still manages busy days: for the early-May holiday its own site has listed separate morning and afternoon entry windows. Weekends and Chinese public holidays are the likely busy days, so avoid them if you can, and on any day arrive in the morning, because ticket checks stop in the afternoon.

Winter

Winter is the quieter season, and the mountains run cooler than the city. Dress in layers, wear shoes with grip, and expect shorter daylight, so start in the morning. The scenic area's opening hours and last-entry time vary between sources and seasons. Check its official visitor guide, which is in Chinese, or ask the operator, instead of relying on a time printed on a blog. A winter booking still needs your passport details, and the bridge can still close in severe weather.

How long to allow

Allow half a day. The scenic area gives the A line, the canyon walk, as about 3 km and about 3 hours, and the B line with the bridge as about 3.5 km and about 3.5 hours. Queues for the bridge, photo stops and any extras add to that. The shorter B1 route is listed at 1.5 km. Do not put the bridge in the same day as Tianmen Mountain or the Forest Park: these are separate scenic areas, each with its own ticket, and the canyon route alone takes most of a morning.

From Zhangjiajie city

The scenic area gives the drive from the main urban area as about 60 km along the S306 provincial road, about an hour. By bus, its guide describes taking a bus from the central bus station to Wulingyuan, about 50 minutes, then the dedicated bus to the canyon, about 40 minutes. The coach terminal at Zhangjiajie West station also runs a direct shuttle to the canyon, which Wikivoyage puts at about 60 minutes. Timetables and fares change, so check them on the day before you commit to a bus.

From Wulingyuan

From Wulingyuan the scenic area gives about 25 minutes by car along the S306 to the lower car park, then a free 5 km shuttle to the visitor centre. You can also drive to the upper car park beside the visitor centre. A dedicated coach runs from Wulingyuan bus station to the canyon entrance in about 35 minutes, by the scenic area's own description. If you are staying near the Forest Park, Wulingyuan is the easier base for the canyon, and it keeps the bridge day short.

Flights and trains

Most visitors arrive at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport, the second largest in Hunan, or at Zhangjiajie West station, the high-speed rail station that opened in December 2019 about 5 km outside the city centre. Wikivoyage lists direct trains from downtown Changsha taking about 2 hours, and places Zhangjiajie about 250 km northwest of Changsha. From either arrival point you still need onward transport to the canyon, so do not schedule the bridge for the day you land. Wikivoyage warns of taxi touts in the airport car park who may refuse the meter, so ask your hotel to confirm the fare with the driver.

What to wear and carry

Wear shoes with grip: the canyon route has walkways, lifts and a slide, and shoe covers are provided for the glass deck. Take only a phone and wallet onto the bridge, because other ticket sellers say larger items are not allowed, and a Chinese travel article adds that selfie sticks and big bags are banned, with storage available. Small snacks and bottled water are allowed in the scenic area, but alcohol and glass containers are not. Bring a light rain layer in any season, and your passport.

Heights, health and children

The deck is six metres wide, but it is about 300 metres above the canyon floor. Ticket-seller guidance advises against it for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or who are afraid of heights, and says children should be accompanied. The scenic area itself asks anyone who feels unwell not to try its thrill activities. The routes include lifts, but we found no official statement on step-free access, so ask the operator before you book if mobility is a concern.

Who this isn't for

If you have a single day in the region and want the sandstone pillars of the Avatar scenery, the Forest Park is a better use of it, because the bridge takes half a day on its own. If your dates fall in a week of heavy rain, you may spend the morning at a closed deck, so consider moving them. If a few hours on your feet is too much, the bridge-only ticket on the scenic area's own page is the shorter way to cross.

It can. Severe weather can close the bridge, and mountain weather changes fast. Book with free cancellation where you can, keep a spare day, and ask your seller what happens if it closes on the day itself.

How long does the glass bridge visit take?

The scenic area gives about 3.5 hours for the B line, which covers the bridge and the canyon walk, and about 3 hours for the canyon-only A line. Queues and extras add time. Plan around half a day.

How far is the glass bridge from Zhangjiajie city?

Only a phone and wallet. Shoe covers are provided for the deck. Wear shoes with grip for the canyon walk, and carry your passport.
